Renovation and expansion of a cottage on the shores of Lake Ouareau in St-Donat.

Made of noble and contemporary materials, this modest cottage is all about contrasts: empty and full, black and white... The existing and the addition are joined by a generous glazed window opening onto the stairs and offering a magnificent view of the lake. The glued laminated wood frame adds a natural and warm touch to the whole.

The Bois-Ellen housing cooperative, near the Concorde metro station in Laval, is a 166-unit project (Société d'habitation du Québec (SHQ) SHQ’s Accès-logis program) for families and single individuals and seniors with a slight loss of independence.

This mix of clientele encourages closer ties and exchanges between seniors and younger families. Seniors 65 and over have access to meals prepared on-site and served in the dining room. The landscaped interior courtyard, the multi-purpose room, and the community vegetable gardens are a source of sharing and a step towards food autonomy.

The building was designed according to the novoclimat 2.0 standards besides serving as a testbed for energy savings: triple glazing, sun shades, reduction of thermal bridges… Everything is in place to promote “better aging,” “better living together” and help the planet!
